Plot

Fantasy icon Jane Yolen (The Devil’s ArithmeticBriar RoseSister Emily’s Lightship) is adored by generations of readers of all ages. Now she triumphantly returns with this inspired gathering of fractured fairy tales and legends. Yolen breaks open the classics to reveal their crystalline secrets: a philosophical bridge that misses its troll, a spinner of straw as a falsely accused moneylender, the villainous wolf adjusting poorly to retirement. Each of these offerings features a new author note and original poem, illuminating tales that are old, new, and brilliantly refined.

My Review

I absolutely fell in love with this collection of short stories, just as I knew I would. I have always loved Jane Yolen's books and this one is no different. This is a collection of stories, most of them familiar to the reader, that have been changed, twisted, fractured in some way. It makes for an interesting tale. My absolute favorite from the book was the tale of the troll under the bridge, told from the perspective of the bridge.

Final Thoughts

Sadly this is a short review, but only because of personal life. Overall, I would highly recommend to everyone to pick up this book.

My Rating: (4 Stars)

Plot

In a world where magic is an ordinary part of daily life, two young apprentice veterinarians pursue their dreams of caring for supernatural creatures.

Have you ever wondered where witches' cats go when they pull a claw? Or what you do with a pygmy phoenix with a case of bird flu? Nan and Clarion have you covered. They're the best veterinarian witches of all time—at least they're trying to be. But when an injured rabbit with strange eyes stumbles into their lives, Nan and Clarion have to put down their enchanted potions and face the biggest test of their magical, medical careers...and possibly lose some dignity in the process.

Hex Vet: Witches in Training is the debut original graphic novel from acclaimed cartoonist Sam Davies (Stutterhug) and explores a truly spellbinding story about sticking together and helping animals at all costs.

How I Got This Book

I received this book as a free ARC through BOOM! Studios in exchange for an honest review.

My Review

Adorable. Intriguing. I am not going to lie, I probably wouldn’t have picked this graphic novel up to buy if I hadn’t received this as an ARC. I would have been missing out if I hadn’t. This is an amazing story, with cute art that keeps you turning pages. Who would have thought that a story about a magical vet’s office would have been, not only entertaining, but a story about friendship and helping each other and animals. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has children as an introduction to graphic novels. I would also recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read. This graphic novel explores how helping each other and sticking together even when things seem like they are too hard is the best choice. It also introduces some cute animals (Hello bugbear, I am talking to you!) and a dash of comedy to keep you smiling.

Final Thoughts

I truly think that this was an unexpected gem in my inbox. I am looking forward to seeing what author Sam Davies does next, either with this story or with a new one. I would recommend picking this graphic novel up on Amazon especially since it is less than $10.

Review: Maiden by Teresa A Harrison

Teresa A. Harrison
Published October 6, 2018 by Acorn Publishing, LLC

Book 1 of the Lightwalker Series
My Rating:

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Plot

Marta and Jayme are childhood friends. The story opens with them locked in a heated debate over Marta's soul and their different world views (nature based vs. religion based). They part, Marta to attend her initiation, Jayme to report the upcoming event to the priests.
The women are attacked by the priests and a massacre ensues. Jayme is able to save Marta and get her to safety. When she awakens in the deep forest, and hears a conversation from her hiding place, she knows she is still in great danger and must leave and walk into the unknown. She is hurt, afraid and overwhelmed, but she walks forward into her knew life. She meets unusual magical beings who help her find her way, eventually steering her toward a small cottage in the wilderness. She then spends the summer deep within Mother Earth, learning more about healing, Universal Laws, magic and what it means to be a LightWalker. The path is there for her to follow. If she’s strong enough to embrace it…
Jayme, searching for Marta, also finds his way into the unknown and meets his own magical traveling companions. He spends the summer learning how to become a LightWarrior. He is willing to do whatever it takes... even if it means chopping wood and carrying water.

My Review

Sadly, I was unable to finish this novel. While it started out with gusto, it fell off. The story began in such a way that I needed to know what happened next, but it quickly devolved into a novel that I felt like I had to read, instead of a novel that I wanted to read. I made it about halfway through before I felt like I had to give up. I appreciate being given the opportunity to read Maiden, and I wish that I had enjoyed it as much as I did at the beginning.

Final Thoughts

This novel started off strong with characters that I enjoyed knowing more about. It didn’t stay that way. I did enjoy parts of this book, but it wasn’t enough to keep me reading.

MY REVIEW

Oh, how I waited for this book with bated breath and high hopes. I was not disappointed. Lucy Tempest once again brought me into a world filled with love, friendship, rivals, and magic.

Ada’s story is one that I was drawn into and haven’t stopped thinking about since I was able to read the first novel. I didn’t expect that I would fall in love with each of the characters time and time again. I found myself relating to each of the characters in some way, although I will say it is easy to want to hate some of them. I read this book in one sitting, much like I did the first, but since I read Prince the first time I have gone back and read it many more times.

The characters, I cannot talk enough about the characters and how they are so well written that you wonder at times who you should be rooting for. I am excited to know that many of the characters are going to be making an appearance in later books in this series as the main character. I was so upset with myself that it took me this long to recognize who some of the girls were, but I am glad that I know now who is coming up soon.

The romance is killer. No, like I literally wanted to kill a certain someone at times (ADA I AM LOOKING AT YOU) for not being more understanding. I do completely get why she is acting how she is at times, but at other times I just want to smack her and remind her that she is the main character and to quit being so difficult. I don’t think I would love her as much though if she wasn’t good old difficult Ada.

The “filler” helps to flesh out the story in so many great ways. There is a scene involving a witch and some ghouls that truly helped me to learn more about a character that I had hated since the first book. This girl became real. She had real fears, and real dreams. It helped me to understand why she wanted to win so badly. I began to feel for her and sympathize with her. This was such a key scene and I want to thank Lucy repeatedly for adding it to this novel.

The story as a whole has great pacing that kept my adrenaline pumping while also giving me chances to breathe and calm down.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I thought that the first novel was my favorite. I now believe that every time I review one of Lucy Tempest’s amazing books I will have a new favorite that is competing for its spot with another one. I mentioned before that I haven’t fallen in love with a series as quickly and as completely since the Harry Potter series, and I stand by that. I can only hope that Lucy receives all the credit she deserves for her writing and that she never stops, even once she has told everyone’s story.

Guest Review: Batman: The Red Death #1

Batman: The Red Death (2017-) #1 (Dark Nights: Metal (2017-)) by [Williamson, Joshua]Joshua Williamson (Author) Jason Fabok (Illustrator)
Published September 20, 2017 by DC Comics
22 Pages
Part of Dark Nights: Metal
Amazon Kindle $3.99

My Rating:

Plot

As the events of DARK NIGHTS: METAL rock the DC Universe, the creatures of the Dark Multiverse stand ready to invade our world! How can even the World’s Greatest Heroes stop a horde of deadly beings that appear to be powerful, nightmare versions of familiar figures?

How I Got This Book

I bought this comic for personal reading

My Review

This was phenomenal. Along with deepening the story, it answered one of the long-standing questions that many DC fans have always had: what if Batman gained access to the Speed Force? In a beautifully drawn and narrated world, it shows how far Batman would be willing to go under the right circumstances, even if it means sacrificing friends and allies. Darker than the typical Batman comic, The Red Death showed fans what it would be like if Batman did what he had to do without restraint. By far one of the best comics I have ever read from the DC comics line. I would have to say that this is definitely one of the best in this series.

So now that I am done fanboy-ing over this comic here is what it is about (more or less). Evil ancient dragon god is trying to destroy/takeover the entire multiverse using Batman as a conduit. Evil ancient dragon god employs multiple “evil” versions of Batman from the “Dark” multiverse to basically beat all the good guys, from the “Light” multiverse, asses. That’s where these comics come into play. The Red Death is a combination of Batman and The Flash, a terrifying amalgamation (although not the most terrifying that they covered in this series). The ending of this comic is terrifying and keeps you on the edge of your seat as you struggle to continue to root for the good guys even in the face of defeat.

Final Thoughts

After reading the entire series, this is easily one of my favorite entries. It had amazing art, amazing narration, and in my opinion, one of the best Batman panels I have ever seen. I would highly recommend the series, even if just these tie ins.

Review: The Lost Queen by Signe Pike

Published September 4, 2018 by Touchstone
544 Pages
First in a Trilogy
Rating:

Plot

Compared to Outlander and The Mists of Avalon, this thrilling first novel of a debut trilogy reveals the untold story of Languoreth—a forgotten queen of sixth-century Scotland—twin sister of the man who inspired the legend of Merlin.

I write because I have seen the darkness that will come. Already there are those who seek to tell a new history...

In a land of mountains and mist, tradition and superstition, Languoreth and her brother Lailoken are raised in the Old Way of their ancestors. But in Scotland, a new religion is rising, one that brings disruption, bloodshed, and riot. And even as her family faces the burgeoning forces of Christianity, the Anglo-Saxons, bent on colonization, are encroaching from the east. When conflict brings the hero Emrys Pendragon to her father’s door, Languoreth finds love with one of his warriors. Her deep connection to Maelgwn is forged by enchantment, but she is promised in marriage to Rhydderch, son of a Christian king. As Languoreth is catapulted into a world of violence and political intrigue, she must learn to adapt. Together with her brother—a warrior and druid known to history as Myrddin—Languoreth must assume her duty to fight for the preservation of the Old Way and the survival of her kingdom, or risk the loss of them both forever.

Based on new scholarship, this tale of bravery and conflicted love brings a lost queen back to life—rescuing her from obscurity, and reaffirming her place at the center of one of the most enduring legends of all time.

How I Got This Book

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

My Review

I truly fell in love with Languoreth as a character, only to fall out of love with her in the end. This book begins when she is 10 and continues through time jumps until she is middle-age. While I truly enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to friends who are fans of historical fiction or King Arthur, I don’t think that I would read it again. It is part of a series, and I am curious where they are going to take the story next. With the way the book ended, I truly believe that there can’t be too much left of Languoreth’s story, but they did introduce characters in the last section that could continue it.
Languoreth starts out as a girl full of hope, even though she knows that her life is set in stone and she can’t be a Wisdom Keeper like her brother. She begins to lose that hope throughout the novel, and by the end she is a woman, married with children, having an affair, and having forgotten everything she knew about the Old Ways. She started strong and ended weak. She wasn’t even my favorite character throughout the novel, that goes to another who is only in it for maybe a third of the novel.
There really isn’t much that I can say about this novel. I read it and finished it about a week ago. Life got in the way of me being able to post my review until now, and honestly this isn’t a book that sticks in my mind, even with the notes that I took as I read it.

Final Thoughts

This is an interesting read, with dynamic characters, a straightforward storyline, action, adventure, romance, and magic. I gave this 3.5 stars only because it wasn’t memorable. It wasn’t a book that I could sit and rattle off the details of it to someone in the hopes that they would fall in love with it and want to read it. This is a novel that I greatly enjoyed, and would recommend, but that I wouldn’t think of first when I was recommending novels. 3.5 is a good rating for a book, so pick it up if you like historical fiction or anything relating to King Arthur.

School and my new internship have been kicking my butt lately, but I was finally able to get a book finished (and another half way done) and have a review almost ready to be posted soon! Look for it (hopefully) tomorrow, but if not tomorrow it will be by the end of this week. I am so excited to tell you all about this book!!!

What's On My Shelf?

So I am not quite ready to post another review, but I have been feeling an urge to post lately, so here is my newest thing I am doing: What's On My Shelf?

This is where I get to show you how many books I have on my to-read list and also a way to remind myself that I need to learn to read faster than I already do haha! So here it is:

This is just my current list. I seem to be receiving more and more each day, so who knows what is going to happen tomorrow.

So just to let you all know what is going on here, it is sorted by release date (which is either when the book is due to be published or when I am supposed to be putting out my review depending on publisher). You will notice some from 2012. No I am not that late on my reviews haha. Those are books that I got from NetGalley that don't have an archive date. So yes they have been out a while but they still need reviews!

If it is highlighted then that means I have been approved or won the book but haven't received it yet.

Well that is the post for today. Time to jump off here and put my nose back in my book.

Review: Harley and Ivy Meet Betty and Veronica by Paul Dini; Marc Andreyko

ARC Copy/Kindle (160 Pages)
Published September 4, 2018
Buy from Kindle for $15.68 or Hardcover for $24.99 ($16.50 with Prime)
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Plot
The bad girls of Gotham meet the good girls of Riverdale!

Hiram Lodge (Veronica’s father) wants to invest in the future by building a university with free tuition for Riverdale’s residents. His site is a protected swamp on the outskirts of town, and once news of the plan reaches Gotham City, a certain eco-warrior (a.k.a. Poison Ivy) is determined to prevent the dream from becoming reality.

However, once Poison Ivy and her bestie Harley Quinn arrive, they get mixed up in the sort of hijinks that can only happen in Riverdale. At a superhero-themed costume party, the night’s entertainment–Zatanna– manages to place the personas of the Gotham City Sirens into the bodies of the town’s notorious frenemies: Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. While Ivy (in Ronnie’s body) seeks to derail Lodge’s agenda from within, more than a few nefarious forces–from Jason and Cheryl Blossom to the Clown Prince of Crime himself–have their own foul plans.

This groundbreaking miniseries teams up two of fandom’s best-known duos, bringing the ladies of Gotham and Riverdale together for the first time! This madcap mayhem comes courtesy of Paul Dini (Harley Quinn) and Marc Andreyko (Wonder Woman ‘77), with art by Laura Braga (DC Comics: Bombshells)! Collects Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica #1-6.
How I Got This
I received this as an ARC from the publisher using NetGalley

The Good
Literally everything. I am not even joking right now. I am a huge fan of my Gotham City Sirens, and this one has two of them as the main characters. The artwork was beautiful with rich colors, amazingly drawn outfits, and fantastic panels. The story was fluid and never got boring. You get to meet many of the Riverdale characters, many of whom I was not familiar with as I have never really read the Archie comics, and many of the Gotham City characters as well. There were so many surprise characters in this comic and I wish I could tell you about all of them. I don’t want to ruin anything for you though. Just know that you get to see some of your favorite Gotham villains, meet some new ones, and see some of your favorite heroes as well.
The plot of this comic was straightforward for the most part. What you thought was going to be the plot ends up changing and the new one keeps you on the edge of your seat. (It is so hard to do reviews for something as amazing as this without giving it all away!)
I have to stop myself from gushing about this comic here, but if anyone is interested and doesn’t mind SPOILERS feel free to message me. I will tell you everything you want to know!
The Bad
Nothing. There was nothing bad about this comic. Parts that seemed dull quickly became action filled. I guess the only bad thing I can say is that if you aren’t familiar with Riverdale characters, or for some reason Gotham City characters, then sometimes you may get confused on who everyone is. By the end of the comic though you have everyone figured out and you are ready for more.
Final Thoughts
When I first requested this comic off of Netgalley I really didn’t think that I was going to be lucky enough to be chosen as one of the ARC readers. I am so thankful that I was. I want to tell everyone who reads this to go and order yourself a copy as you won’t be disappointed. You can order it on Kindle, or do what I am planning on doing and have a Kindle version and a hardback version!
